I was just recently talking to a friend who had just had baby and asked me what I did to get mine to sleep through the night. I figured since all of my kids slept for the night at an early age I would give you a list of tips and tricks on what worked for me. But, I have none. Literally, one night I just put them to bed and woke up 7 hours later. Let’s be real here, there is no way to get your baby to sleep through the night. Your baby will sleep through the night when he or she is damn well good and ready. Sure, you can Google: “ways to get your baby to sleep through the night” and I’m sure you’ll find a whole shit load of lists and books to buy that ensure your baby will sleep through the night if you meticulously do everything they say. But, I can almost guarantee your baby does that on their own terms. And then right when your baby actually does start sleeping through the night, your body will have already adjusted to the 3am wake up calls and you’ll find yourself up in the middle of the night scrolling through Instagram like you don’t have to be up in 2 hours. Or, you’ll have a baby who sleeps great but then at 2 years old decides sleeping all night is for the birds and you are now up with a toddler who is ready to start their day at 1 am. So, get your DVR ready because that’s the perfect time to catch up on some Real Housewives.
The only tip I can give you, the only thing I can remember doing when they woke up: When I would put them to bed, I would pray really, really, really, really hard for them to sleep through the night. That seems to have been what worked for me. If not, of course I would feed them but if they didn’t wake up, it would be a game changer. My grandmom always said around 11 lbs babies start sleeping through the night but I know 20 lb babies who still don’t sleep all night and I’m pretty sure she just said that to give me a glimmer of hope. Once you come to terms with the fact that sleep is now a luxury, it’ll make the fact that your baby doesn’t sleep through the night much easier to handle.
And while I can completely understand why you would want to brag about your amazing one week old already sleeping through the night, just remember next time your posting your Facebook status that there is a woman (me at one time) out there who have literally had zero sleep after 6 months. Who after months and months of reading books/lists still haven’t slept. And they will see your status and compare themselves to you and think they’re doing something wrong – and they will cry because they’re hormonal AF. When in reality we all know how different babies are. So think before you tweet.
